Phyllis J. Ladehoff
Washington
Phyllis J. Ladehoff, 89, of Washington, died peacefully on Friday, December 12, 2025. A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date.
Phyllis was born April 2, 1936, in Washington, Iowa, to Laurel “LP’ and Mildred (Lynn) Statler and grew up on a farm near West Chester, Iowa. Following graduation from West Chester High School in 1954, Phyllis graduated with a diploma from the American Institute of Business in Davenport. On August 14, 1955, she married Glenn Ladehoff, and they made their home near West Chester for nearly 58 years.
Phyllis kept busy at home raising their young children, Glenda and Mike, until they reached school age when she began working for Mid-Prairie Schools. She served first as the building secretary at West Chester Elementary, then worked for many years as a para-educator at Wellman Elementary, Kalona Elementary, and Mid-Prairie High School. She also worked as a teaching assistant at Bright Horizons Child Care in Iowa City and for 10 years at Children’s Garden Country Preschool near West Chester.
While Phyllis loved working with children of all ages and abilities, she most loved time spent with her family. She was a master cook, baker of many delicious treats, and thoughtful gift-giver, and delighted in the role of grandmother and great–grandmother.
Phyllis is survived her children Glenda (Jack) Seward and Mike (Terri) Ladehoff, all of West Chester; grandchildren, Tim (Hanna) McDowell, Shelby (Taylor) Flynn, Ian (Sara) McDowell, Mallory Ladehoff; Jed (Kailee) Seward and Leah (Patrick) Curl; great-grandchildren, Erica, Alyssa, and Brett McDowell, Jaycee, Bretton, Maelyn, and Marlow Flynn, Raeghan, Emerson, Quinlan, and Cameron Seward, Jackson, Karsyn, Kennik, and Kashlyn Cornwell, and Knox and Roux Curl; sisters, Janice Gibson of North Liberty, and Joyce Hardy, of Ottumwa, along with numerous nieces and nephews, and their children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Glenn Ladehoff, her parents, LP and Mildred Statler, her parents-in-law, Fritz and Gladys Ladehoff, and her brother-in-law Chuck Gibson.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Compasses Hospice in Washington, Iowa, or the charity of your choice.
The family wishes to thank the staff of the United Presbyterian Home in Washington, and Compasses Hospice for the care and compassion they showed to Phyllis and her family.
