A celebration of life for Rachel J. (Shelton) Beatty, 87, of Washington, formerly of Mount Pleasant, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 17, at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. David Bracht-Wagner officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Home Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until service time at the church. A memorial fund has been established for the National T.T.T. Society Camping For Girls Project Fund. Rachel Beatty died Monday, Dec. 13, 2021, at Halcyon House in Washington following a decline in health. Beatty Funeral Home is assisting the family.
Rachel Jean (Shelton) Beatty was born Feb. 20, 1934, in Allerton, Iowa, the daughter of Clayton Elliott and Wilma Grace (Hiltabidle) Shelton. She graduated as valedictorian at Allerton High School and graduated from Iowa State University with a bachelor's in science. Rachel taught school for 10 years. On June 24, 1956, she was united in marriage to Robert Beatty at Clio Methodist Church. The couple owned and operated the Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant for many years. Rachel was a member of First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant, where she served in the United Methodist Women's group. She was the director of Campfire Girls, and served in many clubs, including the National T.T.T. Society of Iowa. Rachel loved plays and musicals and attended at the high school, community, regional and Broadway levels.
Survivors include her son, Mark (Susan) Beatty of Washington; daughter, Lori (Steve) Petros of Willow, Alaska; four grandchildren, Samantha Grace Fye, Ashley (Calvin) Graybill, Alaina Beatty and Alijah Beatty; one great-granddaughter, Millie Jean Graybill; twin brother, Ronald (Judy) Shelton of Scottsdale, Ariz.; sister, Mary Ann (Roger) Christensen of Ogden, Iowa; and cousin/brother of the heart, Richard "Butch" Shelton of Omaha, Neb.
Preceding Rachel in death were her parents and her husband, Robert Beatty, on June 17, 2020.
