Raymond Smith, 92, and his wife, Betty Lou Smith, 90, of Columbus Junction, both passed away Sunday, May 31, 2020, at the Morning Sun Care Center only a few hours apart with family by their side. Visitation for Raymond and Betty will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, June 5, at Snyder and Hollenbaugh Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 6, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery.

Raymond Smith was born Oct. 6, 1927, in Cario, Iowa, the son of Gale and Mildred (Hahn) Smith. He was a graduate of Wapello High School. Betty Lou Nichols was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Morning Sun, Iowa, the daughter of Clifford and Emma (Malcom) Nichols. She attended Wapello High School. On Aug. 22, 1948, Raymond and Betty were united in marriage in Kahoka, Mo. They lived together for over 71 years. Raymond was a farmer and a member of Hope Bible Church of Columbus Junction. In his earlier years, he enjoyed airplanes, taking trips on his motorcycle with Betty and trucking. He was a good father, who always took care of his children, a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved spending time with family and friends and telling stories about his past.
Betty was a member of Hope Bible Church in Columbus Junction. She helped at the church for 50 years and also attended Coffee Club. Betty enjoyed riding motorcycles with Raymond. They took many trips to Branson, Mo. She was a good mother, who always took care of her children and home, a loving grandmother and great-grandmother. Betty loved to spend time with family and friends. She especially loved attending grandchildren's activities.
Raymond and Betty will be deeply missed by their son, Dennis Smith of Columbus Junction/Des Moines; daughter-in-law, Julie Smith of Columbus Junction; eight grandchildren, Jobi, Nicolle, Ben, Brendle, Megan, Brandon, Corey and Chelsey; and 13 great-grandchildren. Raymond is also survived by his brother, Lyle Smith of Columbus Junction.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Cheryl; and two sisters, Verlee Wells and Betty Chatfield. Betty was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Donald; daughter-in-law, Cheryl; one brother, Kenneth Nichols; and three sisters, Marge Hartsock, Arlene Nelson and Shirley Mason.
