CEDAR RAPIDS ? Raymond E. Roland, 86, of Fairfield, died Thursday, Oct. 1, 2015, in Parkview Care Center in Fairfield.
His body has been cremated, according to his wishes. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 6, at Evergreen Cemetery in Fairfield, followed by a celebration of life at the home of his nephew, Steve Winslow (1936 216th Street off South 32nd Street, behind Access Energy, in Fairfield). Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m., Monday at the Steve Winslow home. Memorials may be made to Parkview Care Center and sent to Debi Sammons at 309 Birch Avenue, Mount Pleasant, IA 52641. Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home in Cedar Rapids is handling arrangements.
Mr. Roland was born Nov. 8, 1928, in Jefferson County, the son of Ralph Clayton and Ruth Lillian (Kilburn) Roland. He married Doris Davis in 1948. The couple later divorced. He married Patricia Reece Carruthers on Dec. 18, 1979, in Keosauqua. She preceded him in death.
He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1946. He spent his entire lifetime in the Fairfield, Libertyville and Brighton areas. He was in the National Guard and later in the Navy, and served in the Jefferson County Posse. He did carpentry work, maintenance at Parsons College, and was a feed salesman. He loved horses, playing cards, dancing, and spending time with his family and friends. He was in the Brighton Saddle Club and later in the Lockridge Rough Riders Club.
Surviving are one son, Ron Roland of Fairfield; one daughter, Debi Sammons and husband Steve of Mount Pleasant; two granddaughters; two grandsons; one great-grandson; one great-granddaughter; one sister, Linda Burger of Fairfield; one nephew; and special friend Dixie Ruggles of Fairfield.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia, on Feb. 28, 2007; his parents; one brother-in-law, Dewayne Burger; and one niece.
