COLUMBUS JUNCTION ? Raymond Ernest Swailes, 82, of Conesville, died Wednesday, April 19, 2017, in the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 25, at the Stacy-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services in Columbus Junction. Burial will be in the Columbus City Cemetery. Following the burial, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the American Legion in Columbus Junction. Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., Monday at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established at the funeral home.
Mr. Swailes was born Dec. 6, 1934, in Washington, the son of Rodney and Eva (Wagner) Swailes. He married Phyllis Irene Tisor on Dec. 28, 1957, in Columbus Junction.
He proudly served his country in the Army. He was a member of the American Legion and Grace United Church of Christ. He enjoyed the people he met through his 27 years of delivering LP for the Farmers Elevator and Exchange at Wapello, researching his family history, pheasant hunting, mushroom hunting, and gardening. He was an avid fan of the Iowa women?s basketball team. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Surviving are two sons, Larry Swailes and wife Barbara of Crawfordsville, and Keith Swailes of Raleigh, North Carolina; and two sisters, Pauline Gingerich of Keota, and Ruth Lukins of Columbus Junction.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis; his parents; one brother, Henry Swailes; and one sister, Evelyn Gingrich.
