Regina Marie 'Jean' Mitchell
Regina Marie "Jean" Mitchell, 99, of Mt. Pleasant died at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2000, at the Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mt. Pleasant.
A Christian Vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 5, at the Gathering Center of the St. Alphonsus Church, after which the family will receive friends. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in the St. Alphonsus Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be given to the St. Alphonsus Capital Campaign Fund or to the Fellowship Cup. The Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mt. Pleasant is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mitchell was born June 18, 1900, in Adams, Minn., the daughter of Frank and Barbara Retterath Winkels. She married LeRoy DeLoss Kenyon on Aug. 14, 1915. He died of the influenza epidemic on Nov. 11, 1918. On July 5, 1929, she married Edward Winston Mitchell. They made their home in Iowa. She worked in the St. Augustin's School Cafeteria in Des Moines until moving to Mt. Pleasant in 1961. Edward died on Jan. 21, 1962. Mrs. Mitchell worked at the Manning School Cafeteria until it closed. She then spent a considerable amount of time caring for children. She was a member of the St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and the Daughters of Isabella. Jean was also a volunteer and member of the Henry County Health Center Hospital Auxiliary.
Survivors include one daughter, Dorothy McCormick of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Birdie Dunlop of Austin, Minn. and Olive Hanson of Canby Minn.; one brother, Robert Winkels of Prescott, Ariz.; ten grandchildren and their spouses, Larry (Docie) McCormick of State College, Pa., Jim (Shauna) McCormick of Mt. Pleasant, Jean (Ben) Broussard of Bossier City, La., Elizabeth (Howard) Wenger of Iowa Falls, Kathleen (Ben) Barela of Cedarburg, Wis., Barbara (Bill) Heying of Tucson, Ariz., John (Sue) Kenyon of Tucson, Ariz., JoAnn DeChant of Tucson, Ariz., Bonnie (Tom) Koenning of Littleton, Colo. and Cecilia (Dennis) Hanson of Loveland, Colo. Also surviving are 27 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; one son, Albert Kenyon; one great-grandchild; and one great-great-grandchild.
