Richard A. Paul, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, March 14, 2021, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a short illness.
Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, March 19, at the
Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with Pastor Kwang Song officiating. Calling hours will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 18, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Interment with military honors will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Mask usage and social distancing guidelines are encouraged. To celebrate Dick's love of the Iowa Hawkeyes, people are encouraged to wear black and gold to the visitation and memorial service. Richard A. Paul was born Feb. 10, 1929, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Donald C. and Darlene (Nichols) Paul. He attended school in Washington graduating from Washington High School in 1947. Dick then attended Washington Jr. College for one year and attended the University of Iowa for two years. He was united in marriage to Mary Ann Bauer on July 7, 1951. Dick served honorably in the U.S. Air Force for four years.
Dick owned and operated Paul's Shoes from 1960 until 1997. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington, the Chamber of Commerce, and was a member of the Washington City Council from 1978 until 1986. He received the Chamber of Commerce Man of the Year Award in 1980. Dick was an active member of the Washington Golf and Country Club. Dick was instrumental in starting the Washington Demon Booster Club and the Washington County I Club and was very involved in the beginning of Washington Family Medicine. He was an AVID Washington Demon, Iowa Hawkeye and St. Louis Cardinals Fan.
He is survived by his son, Bruce Paul and wife Mary Kay of Ft. Dodge, Iowa; son, Craig Paul and wife Leslie of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Sharon Kleinau and husband Rich of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Debra Brinkman and husband Ivan of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Ann, in 2003; son, Steve Paul; brother, Don Paul; and granddaughter, Jennifer Peck.
