Richard Bruce Gilmore was born June 27, 1936, near North English, Iowa the son of Robert & Edna (King) Gilmore. He graduated from English Valleys High School. In 1959 Richard joined the U.S. Army Reserves. In 1963, Richard was united in marriage to Alice Werner at the North English Christian Church, she passed away in 1987. In 1988, Richard married Sandra (Finch) Clawson at the Sigourney United Methodist Church. Richard owned and operated Gilmore Radio and TV from 1964-1989, he then went on to work at Kinze Manufacturing until his retirement in 2001. Richard was a member of the North English Christian Church, where he held various offices over the years. He enjoyed flying his ultralight aircraft, doing so into his early 70s, riding his Harley Sportster until two years ago and riding his fat-tire minibike on the acreage he lived on. Richard died on Sunday, November 26, 2023 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney at the age of 87.
He is survived by his son Daniel (Melinda) Gilmore of Hanibal, MO, a granddaughter Paige Peer of Des Moines; three stepchildren Joe (Cathy) Clawson of Sigourney, Tammy Appleget and Tom Clawson both of Oskaloosa; two stepgrandchildren Tyler Clawson and Megan (Braden) Horn; a stepgreat-granddaughter Lucy Horn, all of Sigourney; two brothers Robert Dean Gilmore of Natchez, MS, and Delbert (Marilyn) Gilmore of Iowa City; and good friend and house cat, Spook. He was preceded by his parents; both wives Alice & Sandra; and a sister-in-law Ethel Gilmore.
Celebration Of Life Service was held 10:30 am on Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be in the Brethren Cemetery, rural South English. Visitation was from 4:00 - 7:00 pm on Friday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be given to the North English Christian Church. Messages and tributes may be left at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
