Richard Charles Eklund was born on May 10, 1934, in Fairfield, IA to Alvin and Vera Leathers Eklund. He attended Fairfield High School, graduating with the class of 1953. His patriotism led him to join the United States Army in October of 1954, serving as a tank mechanic until his honorable discharge in October of 1956. He carried the pride of his service throughout his life.
Throughout his years, Richard connected with others through his varied interests and work. He entered the workforce at Brown’s Shoe Store in Oskaloosa, IA before taking a job at Kessler Distributing in Fairfield. After retirement he remained busy as a custodian for the Fairfield Community School District and at Loglis. Richard was united in marriage to Doris Blough. The two later divorced and in 1995, his path led him to marry Sue Koffman, who passed away in 2012. Professionally, he built a legacy known for dependability and resourcefulness, respected by all who worked alongside him.
A man of many passions, Richard embraced the arts through painting and music, which brought tremendous joy to those around him. He was often found strumming his guitar or playing his fiddle to the tune of his favorite bluegrass songs. On sunny days, he enjoyed a good round of golf, fishing, or playing a game of cribbage. Richard was also deeply rooted in his faith, actively participating in his Bible study and being a devoted member of the Fairfield Friends Church.
He is reunited with loved ones who preceded him in death — his parents Alvin and Vera Leathers Eklund; daughters Julie McCracken and Tracy Symmonds; and sisters Mary Roland, Ruth Hoover, and Shirley Johnson.
Richard's memory will be a treasure held close to those he has left behind. He is survived by his daughter, Kelly (Troy) Brobst of Jefferson, IA; his son, Jim (Kathy) Eklund of Fairfield, IA; two stepsons, Eric Koffman and Paul Koffman; eleven grandchildren, twenty-one great-grandchildren, and three siblings, Larry Eklund, Connie Barton, and Linda Clemmons. His absence will be felt, but his memory will be celebrated by his family and his many friends.
