Richard “Dick” Dean Dickinson was born on September 19, 1945, in Fairfield, Iowa, to Irene (Adam) and Charles Dickinson. He passed away at the Cottages – Hearthstone of Pella on October 6, 2022, at the age of 77. Dick grew up in rural Birmingham, Iowa, and graduated from Van Buren Community Schools and attended college at Northeast Missouri State (Truman State College). He lived in Pella since the early 1970’s and was employed for 35 plus years as a hog buyer for Wilson, Heinold, IPB, and Tyson Foods retiring in 2006. On June 23, 1973, he was united in marriage to Mary Cox in Fairfield, Iowa. Daughter Carrie and son Todd made the family complete. Dick enjoyed classic cars, raising his family, NASCAR racing, watching sports, and being a grandfather. In his free time, he liked farming and gardening, attending the Iowa State Fair, and cheering on his beloved Iowa Hawkeyes. Dick was a loving husband, a loyal friend, and a proud grandfather.
Those left to cherish his memory are the following: daughter, Carrie (Carter) Spoelstra, of Ankeny; son, Todd (Jessica) Dickinson, of Ackley; seven grandchildren, Paige Spoelstra, Faith Spoelstra, Gavin Dickinson, Damon Henry, Seth Henry, Kylee Buffington, and Maddilyn Buffington; mother, Irene Dickinson, of Fairfield; brothers and sisters, Sandra (Jerry) McLain of Milton; Sue (Bill) Lowe of Birmingham; Mike (Connie) Dickinson of Ankeny; Patricia Dickinson and Craig Cole of Lenexa, KS; Ed (Teri) Dickinson of Douds; Leo (Iya) Dickinson of Jacksonville, FL; Annette (Bryan) Bravard of West Des Moines; brothers-in law, Dale (Eunice) Cox of Swedesberg; David (Brenda) Cox of Ollie and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dickinson; father, Charles Dickinson; sister, Carol Dickinson; in-laws, Marian and Richard Cox; and brother-in-law, John Cox.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Pella, on Thursday, October 13, 2022. Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m., Wednesday, October 13, 2022, at the Garden Chapel Funeral Home, Pella, with family present from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Alzheimer's Association or Hospice of Pella.
