Born March 18, 1934, in Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Richard Eicher Hulme was the son of Samuel S. and Verna M. (Eicher) Hulme. He was a 1952 graduate of Wayland High School. After high school, Richard went to Iowa State University for a year. He married his high school sweetheart, Beverly A. Conrad, on April 3, 1955. Together, they settled on the family farm and had seven kids. Sadly, Beverly passed away July 17, 1966. Richard went on to marry Kathleen L. Deaton on Sept. 30, 1967. While Richard was farming, he also worked at the Wayland Lumber Yard. Around 1972, Richard quit farming and sold most of the land. He then went to work at Taylor's Inc. Feed Store and Hatchery in Mount Pleasant. He kept eight acres and built a chicken house, which had 12,000 laying hens. After Taylor's, Richard worked for LS Building as the building superintendent, working mostly with hog confinement buildings. Richard was a member of Finley Chapel for years and then Harmony Bible Church until 1988, when he moved to Naples, Fla. While in Naples, Richard was a security guard, retiring in 2000. In 2006, he returned to the Wayland area and then to Mount Pleasant. He was a member of Center Point Community Church in Naples and attended Calvary Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.
Along with his wife, Richard is survived by two daughters, Connie (David) Brown of Mount Pleasant, Iowa, and Teresa Hulme of Mount Pleasant, Iowa; six sons, Rick (Debbie) Hulme of Pueblo West, Colo., Steve (Lisa) Hulme of Overland Park, Kan., Kevin Hulme of Longview, Texas, Brian (Tavia) Hulme of Great Falls, Mont., Michael (Kaye) Hulme of Sun City Ariz., and Gary (Alicia) Hulme of Ankeny, Iowa; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
