Richard Allen Egli, 70, of Washington, Iowa, died Saturday, Aug. 7, 2021, in Mint Hill, N.C. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa, with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Interment with military honors will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Iowa Firefighters Memorial. Richard Allen Egli was born April 26, 1951, in Cook County, Ill., the son of John O. and Grace (Brown) Egli. He attended school in Maquoketa, Iowa, and graduated from Elkader High School. He was united in marriage to Jeri Fleming on May 22, 1981, in Fort Worth, Texas.
Richard had lived the past 36 years in Washington, Iowa. Prior to that, he lived in Cedar Rapids, North Liberty and Arlington, Texas. He worked as an operating room technician before serving honorably in the U.S. Navy. Following his time in the service, he attended St. Luke's School of Nursing, where he graduated in 1979. Richard worked in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (I.C.U.) at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids. He later worked at the University of Iowa in the I.C.U and Operating Room (O.R.), at Mercy Hospital in the O.R. and Emergency Room, at Washington County Hospital in the O.R., and he worked as an orthopedic assistant.
He was a volunteer fireman in North Liberty and Washington and an EMT in North Liberty. He enjoyed target shooting and liked to repair and restore guns. He was an avid member of the National Rifle Association. Richard enjoyed reading about the Civil War and participated in Civil War reenactments for several years. He also enjoyed carpentry and woodworking.
Richard is survived by his wife, Jeri Egli of Washington, Iowa; son, Rick Egli Jr. and wife Cici of Mint Hill, N.C.; son, Rob Egli and wife Kayla of Greer, S.C.; son, Ryan Egli of Washington, Iowa; son, Ron Egli and wife Angie of Gilbert, Ariz.; six grandchildren; mother, Grace Egli of Washington, Iowa; sister, Cathy Schneider and husband Jerry of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and sister, Jeanine Schromen of Dubuque, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his father, John O. Egli; two brothers, John D. Egli and Paul Egli; and one brother-in-law, Philip Schromen.
