Richard ?Dick? Lee Hayes, 89, of Washington, died Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2016, in Halcyon House in Washington.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 19, at the Beatty Funeral Home in Washington with Doug Tinnes officiating. Burial will follow at Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m., Friday at the funeral home, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Washington County and the Ronald McDonald House.
Mr. Hayes was born May 28, 1927, in Washington, the 10th son of Lloyd and Lucetta (McNeese) Hayes. He married Evelyn Chalupa on Sept. 21, 1947, at the Pleasant Hill Church.
He joined the Navy toward the end of World War II and served in China. He was a farmer until retiring in 1980. He was a member of the Pleasant Hill Church and attended Faith Baptist Church until declining health prevented that. He enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, tinkering in his shop, and going to the condo at the Lake of the Ozarks.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn, of Washington; three children, Lloyd Hayes and wife Shelley of Washington, Lucetta Sobaski and husband Duane of Cedar Rapids, and Marion Hayes and wife Christine of Washington; one son-in-law, Mark Bjorndal of Omaha, Nebraska; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Regina Bjorndal; one son-in-law, Randy Jirsa; one daughter-in-law, Debra Hayes; two grandsons; one great-grandson; and nine siblings including two infants and Harold, Jerry, Cloyce, Don, Dwight, Russ, and Merle Hayes.
