KALONA ? Richard Lewis Miller, 92, of Kalona, died Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2016, in the Pleasantview Home in Kalona.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 16, at the Kalona United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gerry Kahler officiating. Burial of the cremains will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 3 to 6 p.m., Friday at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for the Kalona United Methodist Church.
Mr. Miller was born Dec. 8, 1923, in Kalona, the fourth son of Joas S. and Magdalena (Ropp) Miller. He married Martha L. Routh on June 12, 1949, in Des Moines.
He served his country in the Navy during World War II, touring the Pacific Theater aboard the USS Riverside. He was self-employed as a bricklayer and a 40-year member of the Bricklayers and Craftworkers Local No. 3, Iowa. He was also a member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, the Iowa City Aerohawks Model Airplane Club, and was the commander of the American Legion in the early 1950s. He was an avid collector of antique glass, enjoyed woodworking and was an aviation enthusiast.
Surviving are his wife, Martha, of Kalona; four children, Randall C. Miller and wife Tara of Rockford, Illinois, Karen S. Schwerdtfeger and husband Richard of Fernandina Beach, Florida, Russell D. Miller and wife Patty of Marshalltown, and Darryl L. Miller and wife Joan of Rock Falls, Illinois; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Vesta Neale of Wellman, Mary Jane Baker of Columbus, Georgia, and Anne Miller of Harrisonburg, Virginia; two sisters-in-law, Ruby Miller, and Ida Fern Miller, both of Kalona; and one brother-in-law, Ed Yoder of Kalona.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters, Fannie Miller, Lydia Miller, Esther Yoder, and Bernice Miller; two brothers, Paul H., and Alvin L. Miller; and four brothers-in-law, Levi Miller, Don Neale, Leroy Baker, and Dan Miller.
