CHEYENNE, Wyo. ? Dr. Richard ?Mac? G. McCleery, 88, of Cheyenne, Wyoming, died Wednesday, March 29, 20o17, in Davis Hospice Center.
A private memorial will be held in his honor at a later date. Donations are welcomed to Davis Hospice Center, Doctors Without Borders or the Wounded Warrior Project.
Dr. McCleery was born May 7, 1928, in Washington, the son of Richard and Sara McCleery.
He graduated from Colorado College in 1950, attained his medical degree from the University of Iowa in 1954, and then served as a major in the Air Force. His medical residency and internship were completed at Denver General in 1956, prior to moving to Cheyenne to practice medicine until retirement. He was an innovator in bringing computer technology into the medical field in the late 1970s. His career as a pathologist in Wyoming spanned decades, which included being a founding member of Clinical Laboratories in Cheyenne and serving as the Wyoming State Medical Society president in 1981. He was an Emeritus Fellow of the College of American Pathologists and the American Society of Clinical Pathologists. His service and dedication to his work touched many communities throughout the state. Outside of work, his passion for the outdoors touched equally as many lives. He was an avid backpacker, skier, trekker and fly fisherman whose pursuits took him throughout the world. From the high mountain lakes of the Wind Rivers to the higher mountain ranges of the Himalayas, where he hiked to the base camps of Mount Everest (Cowboys on Everest 1988) and K2 (1995).
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Patricia F. McCleery, whom he married Aug. 7, 1965; seven children; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one sister, Margie Fuhr.
