Robert (Bob) Leroy Hummell, longtime Orange County, CA resident, teacher, and coach, passed away on Tuesday, January 14th, just two weeks shy of his 93rd birthday. Bob was blessed with a curious mind, athleticism, and a kind heart. He loved red wine, traveling by train, watching Jeopardy, and making people laugh. He will be greatly missed.
Bob was born in Peoria, IL on January 28, 1932 and raised in Mt. Pleasant, IA. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War he returned to Mt. Pleasant and graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College where he was captain of the football team. Bob taught and coached briefly in Bloomfield and Ft. Madison, IA before moving with his wife and four daughters to Orange County, CA in 1961. In California he taught and coached football at Portola Jr. High, then taught, coached football and wrestling and later was a counselor at Villa Park High School.
He is survived by his longtime partner and best friend Suszan Ales of Santa Ana, CA; his daughters Mary (Jim Bentson) Rankin of Windomar, CA, Amy (Greg) Krier of West Branch, IA, Rubye (Martin) Gillespie of West Branch, IA, and Janey Hummell of San Diego, CA; brother Henry (Mary Lou) Hummell of Orange, CA; sister Fran (Tom) Martin of Fountain Valley, CA; sister-in-law Connie (Kenneth) Hummell of Mt. Pleasant, IA and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Owen M. and Frances L (Schirmer) Hummell; son-in-law Greg (Mary) Rankin; sisters Mary (Dale) Koble and Leola (Donald) Prottsman and brothers Kenneth (Connie) Hummell and Keith (Nancy) Hummell.
