Robert “Bob” Pretz, 86, of Columbus Junction, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, October 15, 2023. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 21, 2023, at the Snyder & Hollenbaugh Funeral & Cremation Services of Columbus Junction. Burial will follow at the Columbus City Cemetery. A visitation will be held Friday, October 20, 2023, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. A general memorial has been established. Robert Raymond Pretz was born on October 2, 1937, at home in Washington County to John and Martha (Pratt) Pretz. He attended Lone Oak School and Columbus School, graduating in 1957. He was active in 4H and FFA, where he enjoyed showing cattle, and in football, basketball and track. Bob was crowned Homecoming King in 1956. On June 19, 1960, he was united in marriage to Janet Thomas.
Bob was a farmer most of his life and he worked for Rath Packing for 9 1/2 years and IBP/Tyson for 29 years. He served on the Louisa County Extension Council and had his 4H Alumni pin. Bob and Janet were named Distinguished Citizens on October 14, 2000. He was an avid fan of the Iowa State Cyclones, Chicago Cubs and Chicago Bears. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, mushroom hunting, and going to the bottom (cabin). He also enjoyed watching Iowa State Cyclones football and basketball, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears. He began walking to better his health and could often been seen walking his favorite route. Bob was known for keeping his lawn in tip-top shape and he loved being around his family.
He is survived by his wife, Janet of Columbus Junction; children, Susan, Steve and Elizabeth, all of Columbus Junction; granddaughter, Lindsey (Garrett) of Beloit, WI; two great-grandsons Jack and Massey; sister, Joan of Columbus Junction; brother, Keith of Columbus Junction; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death his parents; four brothers, Harry, Don, Roger and Vaughn; sister-in-law, Sharolyn; parents-in-law, Elmer and Lynette; sister-in-law, Bev Gordon; and brother-in-law, Warren Gordon.
