Robert Dean Garrett, 93, of Washington, Iowa, died Thursday, August 17, 2023, at the Garrett Wellness Center of the United Presbyterian Home.
A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at the Main Dining Room of the United Presbyterian Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. The family will be present to receive friends from 2 until 3 p.m. at the United Presbyterian Home. Military honors will be accorded at the conclusion of the memorial service. Interment will take place 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, August 30, at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for the Washington Community Y Scholarship Fund. Robert Dean Garrett was born November 1, 1929, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Robert Daryl and Mildred Margarite “Mickey” (Fuhr) Garrett. He graduated from Washington High School and later received his Associates Degree from Washington Jr. College. Dean attended Iowa Wesleyan College for one year. He was united in marriage to Shirley E. Gardner on July 23, 1950, in Washington, Iowa. Dean served honorably in the United States National Guard from 1947 until 1989.
Dean worked in as the Department Head of Data Processing at McCleery Cumming Company for 41 years retiring in 1993. He was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Past President and Past Secretary of the Washington Noon Kiwanis Club, and was on the Leaders Fellowship of the YMCA. Dean served on the Board of Directors of the Washington State Bank for 30 years and was a major sponsor of the Garrett Health and Wellness Center of the United Presbyterian Home. He was involved in many other community projects and activities.
He is survived by his wife, Shirley E. Garrett of Washington, Iowa; son, Terry Dean Garrett of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son, Ricky E. Garrett and special friend, Roberta Bauer of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Pam Garrett of Vancouver, Washington; grandson, Andrew Garrett and wife, Pam of Highlands Ranch, Colorado; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Evan; and grandson, Robert Garrett and wife, Abby of Ankeny, Iowa.
Dean was preceded in death by his parents; son, Thomas A. Garrett; and two sisters, Kathryn Murphy and Donna Peterson.
