Rodger L. McWhirter, 94,
of Burlington, died at 2:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Sept. 3, 1926, in Fairfield, Iowa, he was the son of Ray I. and Mary McCormick McWhirter. On June 5, 1949, he married Geneva I. Davis at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving during the World War II from April 30, 1945 until Dec. 7, 1946.
He was with Osco Drug for 28 years, 17 of which were as manager of the Burlington and West Burlington stores. Rodger was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golf, woodcarving and was a very hard worker. He loved family and family get togethers.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Steve (Beth) McWhirter of Freeport, Ill., and Jim (Pat) McWhirter of Mason, Ohio; one daughter, Kathy (Merv) Rexroat of Evansvilse, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Justin (Naomi), Dylan (Anna), Celeste (Abe), Sarah Beth (Eric), Amy (D.J.), Hannah, Andrea (Tim) and Alex; three great-grandchildren, Lily, Dempson and Luke, and one due in June; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Wilbur D. McWhirter and Edward McWhirter.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church and can be mailed to Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home, 3940 Division St., Burlington, IA 52601, where the memorials will be forwarded to the family.
Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Crematory. A private family memorial service was held at Prugh-Thielen Funeral Home with interim pastor Joan Rodgers officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
