Roger B. Messer

Roger B. Messer, 61, of Mt. Pleasant, died at 10:05 a.m. Friday, Sept. 29, 2000, at the Henry County Care Facility.

      The funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 3, at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. David Tebbenkamp officiating. Visitation began at noon on Monday, Oct. 2, at Weir Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation. Burial will full military honors will by VFW Post #2561 and American Legion Post #58 will be in Forest Home Cemetery. A memorial has been established to the activity fund at the Henry County Care Facility.

      Mr. Messer was born Oct. 8, 1938 at Mt. Pleasant, the son of Lyzell and Ruby C. McNeeley Messer. He attended Mt. Pleasant schools and worked at Mt. Pleasant Lumber Company and United Building Center in Mt. Pleasant from 1958 until retiring in 1985 due to his health. He served over 20 years in the Iowa Army National Guard, 224th Engineering Battalion. While serving in the National Guard, he received many honors as an expert marksman in shooting competitions.

      Survivors include two brothers, Arden Messer of Fairfield and Robert Messer of Machesney, Ill.; one sister, Ruth Ann Snavely of Mt. Pleasant, and nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Marvin Messer.
