Roger Deane Patterson
Roger Deane Patterson, 71, of Mt. Pleasant and formerly of New London, died at his home Friday, June 30, 2000.
The memorial service will be 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, July 5, at Elliott Chapel in New London with the Rev. Jeff McPheron officiating. The body has been cremated and will be interred at a later date. Visitation will be at Elliott Chapel on Wednesday from 9:30 am to 10:30 a.m. prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Crossroads Hospice .
Mr. Patterson was born November 29, 1928, at Winfield, the son of Frank and Opal Marie Leathers Patterson. He married Claire Rhea Moussette on April 19, 1952, at Great Lakes Base Chapel in Illinois.
A 1947 graduate of New London High School and 1957 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, he was a Korean war veteran, serving in the U.S. Marines, attaining the rank of sergeant, and receiving four battle stars during the landing at Inchon. He worked for the Atomic Energy Commission as an expeditor for components for the hydrogen bomb.
He was a union carpenter and helped build Westland Mall, the Iowa Southern Utilities building south of Burlington, and the additions to Burlington Medical Center and Henry County Health Center. He worked as an Iowa State Patrol custodian for eight years before retirement. He received a 1993 meritorious service award from the governor after saving a woman from choking. A member of the Southeast Iowa Officials Association, he officiated at local basketball and softball games.
Survivors include his wife, son Steven G. Patterson of West Burlington, daughter Gloris Brooke Young of Springdale, Utah, four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, and a sister.
