Roger N. Frakes, 82, of Ollie died Monday afternoon, Sept. 13, 2021, at the Keokuk County Health Center following a brief illness. He was born July 7, 1939, in Fairfield, to Joseph Abrams and Viola May Tuller Frakes. Roger grew up in Fairfield and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1957, served in the Iowa Army National Guard and married Sandy K. Baker. She died in November 2012.
He lived in Des Moines, worked in Albia at the glove factory, Dexter in Fairfield, and the Iowa Army Ordnance Plant near Burlington, and was a truck driver. Roger had lots of interests, he was a buck skinner, loved to hunt coon, and trap, was a self-taught musician playing the banjo and guitar, tanned hides and worked leather. He was active in the Patriot Guard Riders serving as a Chaplain, was instrumental in bringing the Vietnam Memorial Wall to the area and was a member of the Richland United Methodist Church and a leader of the Cowboy Church in Richland.
Roger is survived by his daughter, Darla Frakes of Mount Union; and his brother, Harold Frakes of Brighton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; a brother, Jerry; and a sister, Mary Barnett.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 25, at the City Park in Richland with the Rev. Michael Elrod officiating. Military honors will be provided by Richland American Legion Post No. 504. Memorials to the Patriot Guard Riders may be left at the service or mailed to the Richland United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 152, Richland, IA 52585. Gould Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
