Roger J. Helling
Roger J. Helling, 58, of Houghton and formerly of Hillsboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 16, 2001, at Baptist Hospital East in Louisville, Ky.
The funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at St. John Catholic Church in Houghton with the Rev. Dennis Hoffman officiating. Visitation will begin after 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 19, at the church with a Christian vigil service recited at 7 p.m. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery. A memorial is being established. Link Funeral Home of West Point is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Helling was born Aug. 26, 1942, in Fort Madison, the son of William and Ursula Pollmiller Helling. He married Sandra J. Koehler on Jan. 14, 1967 at St. John Catholic Church in Houghton.
He lived most of his life in the Hillsboro area. He was a truck driver, most recently working for Carrie Transit of Keokuk. He was a member of St. John Catholic Church and the Holy Name Society of the church, the Knights of Columbus of Houghton and the Iowa National Guard. He was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed spending his time with his family and his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Jason R. Helling of Hillsboro; two daughters, Lisa J. and Larry Remick of Hillsboro and Linette M. Helling of Burlington; two brothers, William Helling of Denmark and Donald Helling of Mt. Hamill; two sisters, Celeste and William Bultman of Oelwein and Rosemary and Cletus Menke of Wever; and two grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
