Ronald Raymond Newlon, age 82, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Monday, August 18, 2025, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a lengthy illness.
Private family services will be held at a later date, with interment taking place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for St. Jude Children’s Hospital and the United Presbyterian Home. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Ron was born on September 8, 1942, in Charles City, Iowa, the son of Roy Raymond and Vivian (Zink) Newlon. He attended second grade through high school in Alaska, graduating from Anchorage High School. On June 12, 1964, Ron and Linda Statler were married.
Ron spent the majority of his life in Alaska. He worked for the Alaska State Highway Department for six years and then transitioned to Waukesha Engines. He later began work with Reading & Bates Drilling Company in Kenai, Alaska, first onshore and then on the offshore oil platforms with Amoco. He spent his final years at Prudhoe Bay as a drill site operator until his retirement. Ron also served in the Alaska Air National Guard.
In October 1995, Ron and Linda relocated to Iowa. He enjoyed working in his yard, home remodeling projects, and his winter breaks to Mesa, Arizona.
He was loved and will be deeply missed by his wife of 61 years, Linda, of Washington, Iowa; son, David Newlon of Anchorage, Alaska; son, Matthew (Hayley) Newlon of Iowa City, Iowa; two stepsisters, Virginia Wood of Kingsland, Texas, and Janice Sanders of Davenport, Iowa; sisters-in-law, Martha (Gary) Russell of Washington, Iowa, and Patricia (Henry) Coleman of Anchorage, Alaska.
Preceding him in death by were his parents; sister, Debra Kaminski, and two stepbrothers-in-law, Duane Wood and Merlyn Sanders.
