BLOOMINGTON, Ind. ? Ruth C. Mitchel Ammon, 94, of Bloomington, Ind., died Friday, Aug. 14, 2015, in Garden Villa in Bloomington.
There will be no services at this time. A celebration of her life will occur at a later date when her ashes will be scattered with those of her husband. Allen Funeral Home in Bloomington, Ind., is handling the arrangements.
Mrs. Ammon was born Dec. 17, 1920, in Guangzhou (Canton), China, the daughter of the Rev. Dr. Jesse and Alice (Sherbon) Mitchel, Covenanter missionaries to China. She married Eugene H. Ammon, a Sterling College classmate, in June 1943 in Washington, D.C.
Her early school was in Hong Kong, China, and she graduated from high school in Sterling, Kan. After graduating from Sterling College in 1941 with a Bachelor of Science degree, she taught school in Ezel, Ky., for two years. She served as a helpmate to her husband for five years following his completion of seminary. The couple and their three children then moved to Assiut, Egypt, as missionaries with the United Presbyterian Church. After 16 years in Egypt, the couple moved to Basrah, Iraq, to continue their work. After returning to the United States, they served among Assiniboine and Sioux tribal members in Poplar, Mont. She and her husband lived in Bloomington, Ind., for a time in the 1980s and then moved to Washington to live at the United Presbyterian Home. She lived there for 18 years. She returned to Bloomington, Ind., in 2008, where she lived with her daughter until April 2015.
Surviving are three children, David and wife Verlyn of Colorado, Kathy and Doug Enoch of Indiana, and Becky Stetson of Michigan; five grandchildren and step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister-in-law, Jo Mitchel; and four nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; one brother, Dr. Alvin ?Jim? Mitchel; and her parents.
