Ruth Melinda Sayre took leave from this world on Monday, April 1, 2024. Two perfect bird calls sounded from her favorite kitchen clock marking that profound moment in time for her family and friends honored to be with Ruth as she made her transition.

Those of you who knew Ruth understand the 82 years she spent on this planet were not nearly enough for us to benefit fully from the gifts of love, wisdom, humor, and generosity she offered. Ruth spent her youngest years growing up in the Southeast Bottoms of Des Moines, IA and married Jerry L. Sayre (deceased) of Washington, IA. She raised her family- Dan, Mitch, Tommy, Jerry and Heather Sayre- in Southwest Nebraska and retired from the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services in 2001 after a long and committed social work career dedicated to preserving the dignity, health, and safety of many vulnerable citizens. Ruth nurtured her faith as an active member of Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church in Omaha, NE. Ruth lovingly cultivated a sense of community wherever she went and will be missed by truly too many to name

Ruth’s children and grandchildren invite all who wish to celebrate the life of this extraordinary woman. Celebration of life services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, 116 East Main Street, Washington, Iowa 52353. The family will be present to receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.
