Sheila Gerot, 76, of Riverside, passed away on Sunday, June 25, 2023, at her home in Riverside. A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, July 1, 2023, from 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Hills Community Center. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Riverside Fire and Rescue, Washington County Master Gardeners or Iowa City Hospice in memory of Sheila. Sheila Anne Strabala was born on May 10, 1947, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Victor Martin and Clara Mary (Metz) Strabala. She was a 1965 graduate of Regina High School and then received her Associate’s Degree from Kirkwood in accounting. On December 9, 1967, Sheila was united in marriage to Samuel Gerot in Hills. She worked for Marsh and McLeman in Iowa City as an account representative and was a homemaker. Sheila was a member of the Washington County Master Gardeners, Muscatine Garden Club, and local chapter of Questers, an organization that focuses on the preservation and restoration of historical buildings and landmarks. Sheila also volunteered for SHIP – State Health Insurance Assistance Program for 14 years, where she counseled Iowans with Medicaid and Medicare insurance questions. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, cooking, playing cards and taking care of her flower gardens, but most of all she loved to spend time with her family, especially the grandchildren.
Sheila be deeply missed by her husband, Sam of Riverside; her children, Rob (Jill) Gerot of Riverside, Tom (Angie) Gerot of Crawfordsville and Samantha (Jason) Thompson of Iowa City; grandchildren, Katie Gerot and special friend, Blake Wilson, Grant Gerot, Jack Gerot, Allie Gerot, Lizzy Gerot and Justin Thompson and special friend, Abby Westfall; great-grandson, Ivan Wilson; siblings, Regina Strabala of Davenport, Kevin Strabala of Kalona, Victor (Julie) Strabala of Oxford, Lenore (Gus) Manrique of Iowa City; sister-in-law, Cheryl Strabala of Lone Tree; and brother-in-law, Sylvester Fritz of Brighton.
Sheila was preceded in death by her parents; brother and sister-in-law, Martin (Joan) Strabala; sister, Janet Fritz; and sister-in-law, Margaret Strabala.
The family would like to thank Iowa City Hospice, especially Deann, Jasmine and Elaina, and a special thank-you to Liz Comstock for all the support she has given the family during the final months.
