Shirley Ann Applegate, age 83, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2019 at Generations of Unity Point Hospital in Rock Island, Illinois.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery. Shirley was born November 6, 1935 in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Howard and Anita (Havel) Applegate. She graduated from Washington High School in 1954.

Shirley lived on the same farm Northeast of Washington her entire life where she farmed and raised cattle and sheep. She especially loved to care for the baby lambs in the springtime. Shirley enjoyed crocheting afghans, many of which she took to the Iowa State Fair, and cross stitching Christmas stockings which she gave to family and friends. She also enjoyed cooking and baking. Shirley was a member of Farm Bureau and a former member of the Cowbelles.

She is survived by her brother, Larry Applegate and wife Sue of Ainsworth, IA; nephew, Lee Applegate; nieces: Lori Eddings and husband Rich, Yvonne Boone, and Jeanette Wasson and husband Jerry; great-nieces: Averi Eddings and Shalane Harnden and husband Jon; great-nephews: Dalton Applegate, Levi Applegate, Jace Eddings and Shane Wasson and wife Angie; 5 great-great-nephews; and 1 great-great-niece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Robert Applegate and wife Bonnie; and sister, Elizabeth Carr and husband Walt.
