Shirley Elaine Garrett, age 92, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Garrett Wellness Center of the United Presbyterian Home.
A memorial service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, October 10, 2025, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home, with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. The family will be present to receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Washington YMCA and PAWS & More Animal Shelter. Online condolences may be sent for Shirley’s family at www.jonesfh.com.
Shirley was born July 30, 1933, in Crawfordsville, Iowa, the daughter of Leon Everett and Elaine (Summerville) Gardner. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1951. She was united in marriage to Robert Dean Garrett on July 23, 1950, in Washington, Iowa.
Shirley lived all of her adult life in Washington, Iowa, where she was a member of the United Presbyterian Church. Shirley and Dean were major sponsors of the Garrett Health and Wellness Center of the United Presbyterian Home.
She is survived by her son, Terry Dean Garrett of Albuquerque, New Mexico; son, Ricky E. Garrett (Roberta Bauer) of Marion, Iowa; daughter-in-law, Pam Garrett of Vancouver, Washington; grandson, Andrew (Pam) Garrett; grandson, Michael Shelangoski; two great-grandchildren, Sophia and Evan Garrett; grandson, Robert (Abby) Garrett; step-grandchildren: Jamie (Matt) Slife, Jennie (Ryan) Mills, and Kate (Brad) Williams; and step-great-grandchildren: Christian, Ariel, and Jaxson Slife, Natalia, Anna, and Xander Mills, and Ella Williams.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean, in 2023; son, Thomas A. Garrett; sister, LaVon Hahnbaum; and brother, Donald E. Gardner of Garland, Texas.
