Sonja was born March 7, 1935, in Evanston, Illinois, the daughter of Francis Ulrich and Sonja Myrtle (Johnson) Carlborg. She graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1953 and later graduated from Iowa State College in 1957 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Home Economics. Sonny was united in marriage to Bruce Michael Campbell on July 27, 1957, at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Evanston, Illinois.
Sonja grew up in Evanston, Illinois, moved to Washington after marrying Bruce, and grew to love the community of Washington. She was a homemaker and bookkeeper for the family farm operation. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Fortnightly, H.E.O., T.T.T., and a member of Pi Beta Phi.
She cherished family and friends and the memories made with them. Sonny created beauty around her by hosting gatherings, sewing, knitting, gardening and decorating. She enjoyed nothing better than playing a game of bridge with friends. Sonja delighted in travel to places near and far.
Sonny is survived by her daughter, Marcia (Brad) Hildebrand and their children Amy, Kate and Scott of Plymouth, MN; son, David (Mitsue) Campbell of Milwaukee, WI; son, Brad (Olena) Campbell and their children, Sophia and Maria of Washington, IA; and daughter, Susan (John) Parks and their children, Ashleigh, Kyle and Tyler of Caldwell, TX.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bruce Campbell in 2023; two sisters, Catherine Gilmartin and Elizabeth (Betty) Elliott; and one brother, Francis (Frank) Carlborg. Both of Sonja’s parents were of Swedish descent.
A special thank-you to the staff at the Washington County Hospital and Halcyon House for their care and support.
