Sonja M. Reschly, 79, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2019, at her residence. A memorial funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 27, in the chapel of the First United Methodist Church, 309 N. Main St., Mount Pleasant. Pastor Luann Benge will officiate. Burial will be at a later date in the Riverside Cemetery in Marshalltown. The family will greet friends at a luncheon in the church fellowship hall immediately following the memorial service. Those considering an expression of sympathy may direct memorials to the city of Mount Pleasant for the care of the trees in Central Park. Kimzey Funeral Home, 213 N. Sonja Maria (Mullin) Reschly was born Dec. 8, 1939, in Washington, D.C. She was the daughter of Clyde Edward and Jorgine (Ausdal) Mullin. She moved to Iowa during World War II and graduated from Washington High School in 1957. While her children were young, she worked in the kitchen of WACO High School. For 30 years, Sonja was employed by the former Metromail Corp. She also worked a second job at Sunrise Terrace Care Center in Winfield. She retired from Metromail after 30 years of employment. After retirement, Sonja worked as a dietary aide for Arbor Court where she was employed at the time of her death.
Sonja was a member of First United Methodist Church, where she attended the Becomers Sunday school class. She also volunteered for Kids Club, the Wednesday after school program of the church. She volunteered at the Fellowship Cup and was very active in the Summer Sacks lunch program. She loved flowers and gardening in tubs and pots. She held a special place in her heart for her cat, Midnight, as well as the neighborhood cats she fed.
Those thankful for sharing in Sonja's life include a son, Robert Jon Reschly Jr. of Bell Aire, Md.; a daughter, Heather E. Akintola of Cedar Rapids; three grandchildren, Michelle A. Reschly of Springfield, Va., Mary L. Reschly of Burlington and Robert J. Reschley III and his wife, Cortney, of Peoria, Ill.; and two great-grandsons, Robert F. Reschly and Hank J. Reschly.
Her parents and a sister, Marita Voorhies, preceded Sonja in death.
