Stephen was born on August 12, 1935, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Edward and Ruth (Grossman) Rothman. He graduated high school from Culver Military Academy in Indiana and received a B.A. Degree from Colorado College, in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Stephen would go on to complete two years of Law School at the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater. It was in Whitewater that he met his loving wife, Carolyn Holland of Washington, Iowa. The couple would begin the first of 60 years together in Whitewater.
During his professional life, Stephen (or Steve, as many would call him) worked as a reporter/writer for the Janesville Gazette in Wisconsin; joined the United Press International Radio Division in Chicago; Chicago Sun Times; Waukegan News Sun; and later the Palm Beach Post and Palm Beach Review in West Palm Beach, Florida. As a reporter, Steve received the Associated Press Featured Series Award in 1972; UPI Investigative Reporting Award in 1974 and Outstanding Reporter Award from The Florida Public Health Association. Additionally, Steve is named in The Congressional Record, Volume 118 of the US House of Representatives for his investigative reporting.
For years, Steve, his wife Carolyn and their two sons would enjoy time riding horses together. They would move on to riding motorcycles. Steve and Carolyn continued riding together for many years, after the boys moved on to separate lives. As a photographer, he loved to take pictures for work, family and play. Many hours were spent in a darkroom developing photos, which Carolyn would use to make a continually growing pile of scrapbooks. Other pursuits included rifle and shotgun for sport, reading and enjoying a good movie. Steve always tried to help others in many ways. Thus, many years would be spent tutoring students in reading and math. This continued until shortly before his passing.
Stephen was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Rothman; two Sons, Mark Rothman of Frankfort, KY; Robert Rothman of Savannah, GA; 5 grandchildren; and one brother, Richard Rothman of Chicago, IL.
