Steven J. Batterson, age 61, of Davenport, Iowa, died Tuesday, June 27, 2023, at Genesis Hospital in Davenport, Iowa, following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Visiting hours will begin 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 10, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. The family will also be present to receive friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will take place at the Cambrian Cemetery in rural Louisa County, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Stead Family Children’s Hospital or for the Daily Iowan Scholarship Fund. Steve was born August 16, 1961 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Sam and Frances (Owens) Batterson. He attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School in 1979. Steve later graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Journalism.

Steve has lived in Davenport for the past 38 years where he worked and lived the life of a Sports Reporter for the Quad City Times. He was currently serving on the Advisory Board of the Daily Iowan. Steve was the only sports writer in Iowa that had the credentials to vote on the AP College Football Poll. Steve also cast a vote for the Heisman Trophy Candidate for many years. He was proud to have received the Iowa Sports Writer of the year in 2001, 2002 and 2013.

He is survived by his mom, Frances Batterson of Washington, Iowa; brother, Jeff (Christine) Batterson of Washington, Iowa; and niece, Samantha Batterson of Washington, Iowa.

Steve was preceded in death by his father in 2015.
