Susan (Sue) Mary Lucas, age 75, of Brighton, Iowa, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025, surrounded by her family.
A Celebration of Life service will be held from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, 2025, at the Lake Darling State Park Lodge. Memorials have been established for Friends of Lake Darling, Brighton Firefighters Association, and Brighton First Responders. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Sue was born August 12, 1949, in Washington, Iowa, the daughter of Floyd and Marie (Berg) Merz. She spent her early years living in Harper, Iowa. Sue attended St. Elizabeth’s Catholic School in Harper, Iowa, and graduated from Keota High School. She was united in marriage to Merrill Lucas on September 19, 1970. The two spent most of their married lives living at Lake Darling State Park. They were getting ready to celebrate 55 years of marriage together.
Sue worked several years for the Washington Community Schools. She was a secretary for Brighton Elementary and Washington High School counselor's office. In addition, she worked 25 years at Halcyon House as the business office manager.
On September 17, 2017, Sue was given a second chance at life through organ donation via a heart transplant. She greatly appreciated the gift of organ donation.
Sue lived her life for her family. Her grandchildren were the light of her eyes. She had a talent for cooking and often made caramels for her family and friends. She was also known to assist with Friends of Lake Darling activities.
Sue is survived by her husband, Merrill of Brighton, Iowa; daughter, Monica (Mike) Lawson of Altoona, Iowa, and son, Nathan (Tanya) Lucas of Washington, Iowa; three grandchildren: Adam Lawson, Ashley (Colton) Pacha, and Hunter Lucas; siblings: Bob Merz of Burnsville, Minnesota; Lauralee Baker of Marion, Iowa; Claudette (Jim) Coffman of Iowa City, Iowa; Elizabeth (Andy) Nolz of Marion, Iowa; John (Dorothy) Merz of Littleton, Colorado; and Joe Merz of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Jimmy Merz; brother-in-law, Keith Baker; and sisters-in-law, Elizabeth Merz and Barb Merz.
