Thelma Francine Mahan, 95, of Wayland, formerly of Brighton and Fairfield, died Wednesday December 26, 2018, at Parkview Home in Wayland. She was born April 30, 1923, near Harper, Iowa the daughter of Vincent .Ambrose and Dorothy Kay.(Peiffer) Schulte. She attended St. Elizabeth Catholic School, worked at the Button Factory in Washington and at Pioneer Seed in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. Thelma married Leonard Mahan January 15, 1947, in Harper. He died October 23, 2000. They farmed in the Fairfield and Brighton areas until moving to Wayland in the fall of 1997. Thelma was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in East Pleasant Plain, the Alter & Rosary Society for many years and the Burr Oak Club. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing bingo, her flower gardens, slot machines and caring for animals. Thelma will be greatly missed by her family and the staff at Parkview. Her family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the staff at Parkview Home for the excellent care she received. Thelma is survived by two daughters: Peggy Jensen of Muscatine and Denise (John) Widmer of Wayland, and six sons: Russell of Providence, Rhode Island, David of Denver, CO, Dennis of Iowa City, Lyle (Theresa) of Washington, Jeff (Donna) of Rossville, Georgia, and Tom (Sherry) of Zephyrhills, FL, 13 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and God-daughter Lori Schulte. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and 5 sisters: Irma Gent, Geny Bombei, Arlene Samuelson, Theola Herrmann and Betty Adams and one brother, Robert Schulte.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday December 31, 2018, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Charles J. Fladung officiating. Burial will follow at the St. Elizabeth Cemetery in Harper. Thelma's body has been cremated and there will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established for Parkview Home and may be left at the church or mailed to the family at 3245 Redwood Avenue, Wayland, IA 52654. Gould Funeral Home of Brighton is assisting the family.
