Theodore Cannon Stewart, 88, died Monday, Aug. 3, 2020, from complications of Parkinson's disease. A memorial service will be held at United Presbyterian Church in Washington at a later date. Memorial gifts may be directed to the United Presbyterian Home and will be sent to the Domasi Mission Secondary School in Malawi, Africa. Ted was born Jan. 22, 1932 in Washington, Iowa, the son of Cloyce and Mary (Cannon) Stewart. He attended Washington High School (Class of 1949), Westminster College and Northwestern University, where he received his bachelor's degree. He later earned a master's degree from Columbia University in New York City.
Ted taught in elementary schools in New Mexico and in New Jersey, retiring in 1994 after 39 years in the classroom. After he retired, he worked five years as a volunteer teacher with Wycliffe Bible Translators in Papua New Guinea and for an additional five years as a tutor at the Domasi Mission School in Malawai, where he met Herbert Magombe whom he adopted in 2007. Ted supported Herbert and several other students from Malawi and brought them to the United States to receive their college education.
During his years in Summit, N.J., Ted was active in Central Presbyterian Church, serving as elder and Sunday school teacher. He loved opera and theater and was a season subscriber to the Metropolitan Opera in New York City for 40 years. Ted loved to entertain family and friends in his home.
He is survived by his adopted son, Herbert (Patricia) Magombe; and grandson, Theodore Kwesi Magombe; and two sisters, Beulah Temple and Esther Bordwell. He is also survived by 19 nieces and nephews including, Richard (Virginia) Bordwell, Millie (Robert) Youngquist, Mary Temple and Tim Temple of Washington; Bruce (Jeanette) Temple of Ainsworth; Jeff (Shirley) Temple of Crawfordsville; Karl (Patty) Krueger of Winfield; Evelyn (Francis) Greiner and Warren (Sheila) Temple of Keota.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three sisters.
