Thomas Zachmeyer Jr.
Thomas Zachmeyer Jr., 77, of Ft. Madison, died Sunday, April 6, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, April 9, at Elliott Chapel in New London, with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. A private family inurnment will be held in Lowell Cemetery at a later date.
A memorial has been established for the American Cancer Society.
He was born May 20, 1930, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of Thomas and Geneva Woods Zachmeyer. On Jan. 19, 1958, he married Janet Hobbs in Lowell.
Having attended schools in Mt. Pleasant and New London, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. He worked at Iowa State Penitentiary as guard captain and in security at IAAP as lieutenant of guards. He was a member of New London VFW Post 7641 and former member of the police auxiliary in Ft. Madison. He was of the Presbyterian faith.
He is survived by three daughters, Shirle Hammel and her husband Lester of Montrose, Debbie Thomas of Ft. Madison and Terri Clark of Keokuk; five sisters, Retha Shearer of Lake Station, Ind., Roslyn Kamp and Doris Caldwell, both of Ft. Madison, Marjorie Hemm and her husband Edward of Douds, Alice Kamp of Ft. Madison; three brothers, Larry Zachmeyer and his wife Linda of Ft. Madison, David Zachmeyer and his wife Brenda of Sacramento, Calif., and Donnie Zachmeyer and his wife Cassie of Salem; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
His parents, wife, three sisters, three brothers and one son-in-law preceded him in death.
