Thomas D. "Tom" Kerr,
age 73, of Washington, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, November 28, 2020, at the University of Iowa Hospital following a short illness.
A private graveside service and interment with military honors will be held on Friday, December 4, 2020, at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Washington American Legion Post 29 and the Washington Community YMCA. Tom was born December 14, 1946, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Dale N. and Bernice (Amlong) Kerr. He graduated from Washington High School in 1964. Tom served honorably in the Navy Seabees, during the Vietnam War. He was united in marriage to Virginia "Ginny" Gentry on September 6, 1969, at the Naval Base in Newfoundland.
Tom was a lifelong resident of Washington. He started out as a mechanic for the Washington Community Schools and later became the Transportation Director and Mechanic until his retirement. Tom was a member of the Washington American Legion Post 29. He enjoyed playing pool at the YMCA, attending Coffee Club and working with stained glass. Tom was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, duck hunting, deer hunting and mushrooming.
Tom is survived by his wife, Ginny Kerr of Washington, IA; daughter, Dr. Pepper Henyon and husband Erik of Boseman, MT; 3 grandchildren: Walker, Porter and Kennedy; siblings: Judith Speake of Kalona, IA; Robert Speake and wife Tootie of Forest, VA; Martha Marsh and husband Ron of Wayland, IA; Skeeter Long and husband Vance of Queen Creek, AZ; Diane Chalupa of Keota, IA; and sister, Deb Lintz and husband Leon of Homestead, IA; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; infant sister, Sandra Kay Speake; and brothers-in-law, Ralph Unternahrer and Jim Maxwell.
