Treva Jean Hawbaker, 93, died Dec. 28, 2020, at Keosauqua Health Care Center. She was born Oct. 29, 1927, in rural Hillsboro, Iowa, to Roy and Mina Newbold Ridgeway. Treva graduated from Hillsboro High School with the Class of 1945. She married Dewey Blake Phelps on Aug. 8, 1945. Together they farmed from 1945 to 1965. Blake and Treva had four children, Jean, Jodie, Jackie and Wayne. Treva later married John Hawbaker on March 12, 1977.
On the farm, Treva was an avid gardener. She enjoyed dancing and belonged to a clogging dance club while in Minnesota. Treva also liked to water ski, golf and do needlepoint. She was a great cook and loved preparing meals for her family.
She is survived by three daughters, Jean Kooda of Richardson, Texas, Jodie Peters of Norman, Okla., and Jackie Deutsch of Portage, Mich.; a son, Wayne Phelps (Janet) of Stockport, Iowa; six grandchildren, Craig Kooda (Jill) of Plano, Texas, Jon Phelps of Ankeny, Iowa, Jeff Phelps (Kerri) of Stockport, Iowa, Spencer Peters of Edmond, Okla., Cody Deutsch of Portage, Mich., and Trevor Deutsch of Paw Paw, Mich.; six great-grandchildren, Kyle and Carson Kooda, Emma and Dean Phelps, Jack and Cael Phelps and Cameron and Taylor Deutsch; two sisters, Leota Boyce of Camdenton, Mo., and Sharon Conner of Port Byron, Ill.; and a brother, Tom Ridgeway of Anamosa, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Mina Ridgeway; and husbands, John Hawbaker and Blake Phelps; and two brothers, Rex Ridgeway and Gary Ridgeway.
A private family funeral service will be held Saturday, Jan. 2, at Pedrick Funeral Home in Keosauqua. Burial will be at Hillsboro Cemetery in Hillsboro, Iowa. No visitation is planned.
