Valerie Mattison was born November 17, 1952, rural North English, Iowa, the daughter of Norman and Lores (Kleinmeyer) Schultz. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1971. She also graduated from St. Luke’s School of Nursing in Davenport. Valerie was united in marriage to Kenneth Mattison on July 28, 1973, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. The couple lived in Davenport after their marriage until returning to Williamsburg in 1981. She worked as a Registered Nurse for 40-plus years first at St. Luke’s in Davenport until 1981, then at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City until her retirement. Valerie enjoyed camping, boating, waterskiing, quilting, playing cards, watching the hummingbirds, NASCAR, and the Iowa Hawkeyes. Her most treasured time was when she was able to spend time with her family and especially her grandchildren. Valerie passed away on Saturday, February 1, 2025, at her home at the age of 72 years.
She is survived by her husband Ken; a son, Brian (Rhonda) Mattison of Marengo; a daughter, Sara (Chris) Fricke of Williamsburg; five grandchildren, Austin, Brooke (Mekhi), Ashton, Reese and Payten; a brother, Robert (Mindy) Schultz of Leveen, AZ and a sister, Michelle (Christopher) Holst of Van Horne, along with a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Brenda McMenomy.
A memorial service was held 10:30 am on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Visitation was from 9:30 am until service time.
