Vera I. Mathews

Vera Irene Mathews, 97, of Danville, died Monday, Nov. 5, at her son's residence in Danville.

Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, Nov. 8, at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 9, at Elliott Chapel, with pastor Barbara Koenig officiating. Burial will be at Jagger Cemetery in Danville.

She was born Oct. 3, 1910 in Lee County, the daughter of David W. and Lydia Norberg Stevenson. On Jan. 9, 1937, she married Ralph E. Mathews in Denmark.

A graduate of Denmark Academy, she received her teaching certificate at Iowa Wesleyan College and taught at Peachblow School in Lee County. She also worked with her husband at Mathews Implement in Danville as a bookkeeper, and in the parts department.

She was a member of the Entre Nous Club, Danville Garden Club and Des Moines County Cancer Board, and was active with her church circle. She enjoyed cooking, baking and sewing.

She is survived by her son, Donald Matthews and his wife Cindy of Danville; three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents, husband and one brother, Milo Stevenson, preceded her in death.
