Vera R. Spratt was born September 11, 1929, in St. Petersburg, Florida, the daughter of Herman A & Ida (Maas) Von Ahsen. She graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1948. On April 3, 1951, Vera was united in marriage to Leon F. Spratt at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Marengo, Iowa. They raised their family on the Spratt family farm in the Holbrook area. Vera enjoyed being a homemaker mom and helping on the farm. She was a former member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook and a current member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. She was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and the Parnell American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, sewing, crocheting, singing with Dorothy Donahue at Christmas, weddings and funerals and spending time with her family. Vera died on Sunday, April 13, 2025, at the Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg, at the age of 95 years.
She is survived by her children, Dean (Paula) Spratt of Plymouth, MN, Margaret (Larry) Beuter of Iowa City, Ed (Vanessa) Spratt of Williamsburg, Tom (Julie) Spratt of Williamsburg, Joan (Bob) Knoop of Williamsburg, Pat (TerriLe) Spratt of Parnell and Lori (Tim) Walters of Williamsburg; a son-in-law John (Deb) Lower of Williamsburg; 22 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother Ivan (Alice) Von Ahsen; and a sister-in-law June Von Ahsen. She was preceded by her parents, husband, daughter Diana Lower, great-grandson Korbin Digmann, three brothers Merlin, Wilferd and Harvey Von Ahsen, two sisters Leona Smarsty and Edith Wille, and a brother-in-law Merle Spratt.
Funeral Mass was at 10:00 am on Monday, April 21, 2025, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Burial to be at St. Michael’s Cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation was held 4:00 to 7:00 pm Sunday, April 20 at the Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There was a rosary at 3:45 pm on Sunday. A memorial fund has been established for Holbrook Cemetery or Friends of Old St. Michael’s. The family would like to thank Colonial Manor in Amana, Highland Ridge Care Center and Essence of Life Hospice for their wonderful care and compassion.
