MOUNT PLEASANT ? Vernon Benjamin Roth, 93, of Mount Pleasant, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016, in the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.
His body has been cremated, in accordance with his wishes. The family hosted a memorial service at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Aug. 22, at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church with the Rev. Nathan Luitjens and the Rev. Rachelle Luitjens officiating. Burial will be at a later date. Gifts of love and friendship may be given to Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. Olson-Powell Memorial Chapel in Mount Pleasant is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mr. Roth was born Jan. 6, 1923, in rural Wayland, the son of Ben R. and Mary (Graber) Roth. He married Norma Jean Burden on March 4, 1951, at Bethel Mennonite Church, north of Wayland.
He attended Douglas Country School near Wayland. A lifelong farmer, he worked at Welcona Feeds in Wayland. He operated the Sale Inn Café for a year, and then worked for the Henry County Assessor?s office for many years. Known for his delicious pies, he cooked for the Starlight Café, The Olds Coffee Cup, and Jerry?s Restaurant. He was an active member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and the Crusaders Sunday school class. He served on many church boards and was an MYF sponsor with his wife. He arranged the flowers for Sunday morning services and cared for the landscaping outside the church.
Surviving are his wife, Jean, of 65 years; one son, Jason Roth and wife Lauren of Osage Beach, Missouri; two daughters, Jacquelyn Rich and husband Phil of Crawfordsville, and Joni McAlpin and husband Gordon of Villisca; nine grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Edwin Roth of Hesston, Kansas; one sister, Lucille Swartzendruber of Hesston, Kansas; and one sister-in-law, Inez Roth of Winfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one infant son, Ricky Roth; one grandson; four brothers, Elmer Roth, Dan Roth, Lester Roth, and Glen Roth; and two sisters, Lavina Leichty, and Stella Wenger.
