Washington
Virginia R. Smith, 91, of Washington, Iowa, died Sunday, Aug. 18, 2019, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington. Private family services will be held at a later date at Oak Ridge Cemetery in rural Washington County. Memorials have been established for Paws & More, Hospice of Washington County or the United Presbyterian Home. Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Virginia was born March 11, 1928, in rural Washington County, the daughter of Lloyd Adam and Ruth Ella (Robinson) Luers. She was the last child born in the Luers' "Red Brick Home." She attended country school and graduated from Washington High School. Virginia was united in marriage to Donald L. Smith on Aug. 11, 1946, in San Francisco, Calif.
Virginia was a devoted farmwife and homemaker and owned D & V Fabric Shop for 15 years. She was a member of the United Presbyterian Church, Farm Bureau, Fortnightly - Adventures In Living, Sunshine Girls Coffee and the Tuesday Coffee Club. She was a Red Cross water safety instructor for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, caring for her animals, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family.
She is survived by her children, Vicki (Linden) Brinning of Columbus Junction, Vince (Pat) Smith of Washington, Denise (Gary) Gage of Letts and Diane (Don) Adams of Washington; four grandchildren, Traci (Tom) Stewart of Columbus Junction, Chad (Shannon) Smith of Washington, Ryan (Andrea) Adams of Glenwood and Justin (Taylor) Adams of Belle Plaine; and seven great-grandchildren, Shelly and Mitch Stewart, Bridgett and Larz Smith, Jameson Adams and Alannah and Sadie Adams. She also is survived by her brother, Harold Luers of Grapevine, Texas; brother, Lloyd (Jane) Luers of Mechanicsville; sister, Vivian (C.J.) Griffith of Washington; and sister-in-law, Rosemary Luers of Washington.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2001; brother, Hank and wife Bobbi Luers; brother, Dean Luers; sister-in-law, Mae Luers; and longtime friend, Robert Martin, in 2018.
