Walter C. Nelson, Jr.

Walter C. Nelson, Jr., of East Moline, Ill., died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Trinity Medical Center West Campus in Rock Island, Ill.

      The funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29, at St. Anne Catholic Church in East Moline. Burial will be in National Cemetery of Rock Island. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 28, at the Van Hoe Funeral Home, Ltd., of East Moline.

      Mr. Nelson was born March 28, 1926 in Moline, Ill., the son of Walter C. and Madeline Strobbe Nelson, Sr. He married Beverly Matthys on November 7, 1953, at East Moline. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in China. He worked at the former Farmall plant in Rock Island where he was a union committeeman, retiring in 1985 after 40 years of service. He served one term as the first ward alderman in East Moline and was a member of St. Anne Catholic Church, the Viking Club in Moline, and the Moline American Legion Post #246.

      Survivors include his wife; two daughters, LeAnne Jacques and Lisa Schuldt, both of East Moline; a son, Jay Nelson, of Winfield; his mother, of East Moline; a brother, Raymond Nelson, of Junction City, Kan., and eight grandchildren.
