Walter E. Rhodes, 83, of Ainsworth, Iowa, died Sunday, April 26, 2020, at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following a short illness.
Because of state and federal guidance on gatherings due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the family will not be having a public memorial at this time. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorials have been established to the M.L. McCreedy Home. The Jones & Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Walt was born July 10, 1936, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Ivan and Sylvia (Shauff) Rhodes. He attended school in Wellman, Iowa, and graduated from Wellman High School in 1955. Walt was united in marriage to Marilyn McDole on Dec. 21, 1959, in Washington, Iowa.
Walt served honorably in the United States Army and was stationed in Virginia Beach, Va., for several years. Following his time in the service, he moved to Ainsworth, Iowa, where he lived most of his adult life. Walt was an over-the-road truck driver for various companies throughout his life. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and attending the Frontier Coffee Club. He was a member of the American Legion and was proud of his service, and always was supporting local veterans' programs.
He is survived by his daughter, Julie Hoyle and significant other Hank Townsend of Ainsworth, Iowa; two grandchildren, Jacob Bauer and wife Camarie and their children Jade, Kadie and Liam, and Courtney Hoyle and fiance Andrew Alvarado and their children Margo, Natalie, Kayleigh and Ryker. Walt also is survived by two brothers, Daniel Rhodes and wife Mary of Las Vegas, Nev.; and Russell Rhodes and wife Charlene of Destin, Fla.
Walt was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn; two sons, Randy and Darren; and sister, Lorene Pruitt.
