WESLEY JOHNSON
Fairfield
Wesley Johnson, 92, of Fairfield, Iowa, passed away Sept. 4, 2020, at Keosauqua Health Care Center. He was born Sept. 10, 1927, to Fred and Maude Jones Johnson on the farm near Erwin, S.D. He graduated from Erwin High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II, stationed in Japan with the Army Occupational Forces. Wesley married Erma Stephenson on July 27, 1952, in Needles, Calif.
Wesley earned a Bachelor of Science degree from South Dakota State University and a Master of Arts degree from the University of South Dakota. He was a high school teacher and administrator for 37 years in South Dakota, Minnesota and Iowa before retiring from Ruthven Consolidated Schools in 1989. In addition, he was the groundskeeper for Lost Island Community Golf Course for many years. Wes and Erma moved to Fairfield in 2004. He enjoyed golfing, reading books and the newspaper, doing crossword puzzles, gardening, baking bread, doing colored pencil pictures, eating dark chocolate and drinking and serving good hot coffee.
He is survived by his wife, Erma; three daughters, Gwen (Jim) Pedrick of Douds, Iowa, Myrna (Rob Sunderman) Johnson of Des Moines, Iowa, and Anita (David Gardner) Johnson of Kalona, Iowa; four grandchildren, Stephen (Afton) Pedrick, David Pedrick, Benjamin Gardner amd Matthew Gardner; and one
great-granddaughter, Anne Pedrick.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Maude Johnson; a son, Stephen Johnson; three brothers, Lloyd, William and Orville Johnson; and two sisters, Olive Stallworth and Marjorie Onstad.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 9, at Pedrick Funeral Home, Keosauqua. Inurnment will be at Mount Moriah Cemetery, north of Douds. Per guidelines from the Iowa Department of Health, the use of face masks is strongly encouraged and six foot social distancing guidelines must be followed to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Memorial contributions in Wesley's honor may be made to the Lord's Cupboard or Iowa Public Radio and can be left at the funeral home or mailed c/o Gwen Pedrick, 14654 Morrow St., Douds, IA 52551.
