William Allen “Bill” Stewart, age 78, of Washington, Iowa, formerly of Iowa City, passed away Saturday, May 4, 2024, at his home in Washington.
Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 13, 2024, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to Hospice of Washington County, Washington Public Library or CommUnity Crisis Services of Iowa City. Bill was born October 19, 1945, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Richard and Ruth (Finney) Stewart. He graduated from Washington High School in 1963 and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1972. Bill was united in marriage to Janet A. Schiebel on November 23, 1969, in Washington, Iowa. Together they had two children, John and Susan. He later married Rosemary Wiedow in August 1991, in Iowa City, Iowa. Following that marriage, Bill later spent many years with his special friend, Judy Wesling.
Bill’s career was in banking, working at several Iowa City and Coralville institutions and finishing his long career at Hills Bank and Trust Company in Iowa City. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Clarksville Masonic Lodge #668 in Coralville, Iowa; member of the Coralville Chamber of Commerce. Also, he was a former member of Kiwanis and served on the Coralville City Council from 1978 until 1982. Bill was actively involved in numerous boards and community organizations, including serving on the Board of the United Presbyterian Home. He was an avid reader and enjoyed Iowa Hawkeye sports and the Green Bay Packers. Always socially outgoing, he enjoyed a wide network of friends, including a close special six from childhood. Known for his quick wit, ready jokes, and memorable quips, he will long be remembered and deeply missed.
He is survived by his son, John Stewart of Iowa City, Iowa; daughter, Susie Henningsen of Littleton, Colorado; grandson, Brock Stewart; grandson, Josh Henningsen; sister, Pat Stout of Washington, Iowa; and sister, Linda (Jud) Grove of Mt. Airy, North Carolina; several nieces and nephews; and former wife and friend Janet Stewart.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Tim Henningsen; brother-in-law, Roger Stout; nephew, Barry Stout; and special friend, Judy Wesling.
