William Horning, age 89, of Washington, Iowa, passed away Saturday, November 26, 2022, at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington.

Celebration of life services will be held 2:00 p.m. Thursday, December 1, 2022, at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Calling hours will begin noon Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. Interment with military honors will be held at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Bill was born May 6, 1933, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Hazel Mary Horning. Following Hazel’s death, Bill was adopted and raised by his grandparents, Elmer and Emma Horning. Bill attended school in Washington, Iowa. Bill served honorably in the United States Army from 1953 -1955. He was united in marriage to Verla Jean “Peggy” Voorhies on June 4, 1976, in Washington, Iowa.

Bill worked for the Washington County Roads Department for 31 years, retiring in 1996. He loved to tinker and repair matchbox tractors. He was an avid collector of miniature tractors.

He is survived by his cousins: Walter Horning, Dorothy Bagnell and Carol Hesseltine.

Bill was preceded in death by his mother; grandparents; and wife Peggy.
