Yale H. Jarvis, 76, of Washington, Iowa, died Monday, April 19, 2021, at his residence following a lengthy battle with Leukemia. Celebration of life services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, April 24, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home with Chaplain Andrew Zuehlke officiating. Services will be livestreamed on the Jones & Eden Facebook page. Calling hours will begin at noon Friday, April 23, at Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Mask usage and social distancing guidelines will be enforced. Interment with military honors will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established for the Washington Community Y Building Fund for a new swimming pool. Yale H. Jarvis was born May 12, 1944, in Washington, Iowa, the son of Harold W. and Verna (Fry) Jarvis. He attended school in Washington, Iowa, and graduated from Washington High School in 1962. Yale attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute for two years. He was united in marriage to Constance J. "Connie" White on July 31, 1971 in Washington, Iowa.
Following college, Yale worked with his dad at Jarvis Appliance in Washington, Iowa. Yale began his career in Law Enforcement as a Sheriff's Deputy in 1973 and was appointed Washington County Sheriff on Oct. 1, 1975. He served as the Washington County Sheriff and Chief of Police until his retirement in 2004. Yale later worked in the Security Department at Mercy Hospital, was a delivery driver for Hy-Vee Food Store and worked part time at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home. Yale worked security for NASCAR races for many years and was selected to work security at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta.
He served in the Army Reserves, where he was Company Commander for the 134th Medical Unit. Yale volunteered for the Washington Fire and Rescue Department and worked for the Washington County Ambulance. He was a member of the First Christian Church, where he served as an Elder, was a member of Masonic Lodge, Washington Noon Kiwanis, served on the Washington Community Y Board of Directors and was past president of the Iowa State Sheriffs and Deputies Association. He was an avid blood donor, having donated over 20 gallons of blood, coordinated blood drives in Washington County for many years and transported blood for Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center. He enjoyed volunteering at the annual Fireman's pancake day, bike riding, swimming, hunting, fishing and snow skiing. He enjoyed reading and visiting with family and friends. He had a passion for the care of Purple Martins and helped many people install Martin houses in the Washington Community. Yale truly loved being a grandpa and attending his grandchildren's many events. He was extremely proud of their accomplishments.
He is survived by his wife, Connie of Washington, Iowa; daughter, Kara J. Madison and husband Reg of Lincoln, Neb.; daughter, Janel A. Quinlan and husband Ed of Hamilton, Ill.; four grandchildren, Brynna and Chloe Madison and Dominick and Parker Quinlan; brother, Oren Jarvis and wife Mary of Washington, Iowa; and two sisters: Beverly Krotz of Washington, Iowa, and Marianne Hanshaw of Washington, Iowa; and five nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one nephew, Dan Krotz; and two brothers-in-law, Jim Hanshaw and Duane Krotz.
